Vimy Ridge

                                         Vimy Ridge

How did this battle shape our country?

Here is a quick link to a video of the preparation for Vimy Ridge:
Vimy Ridge

The battle of Vimy Ridge on April 9-12, 1917 was a battle that shaped our nation today. After the Germans controlled 175 km north of France, Vimy Ridge. The French and the British soldiers have been planning and fighting attacks/ tactics to gain that part of France back, however, they were not successful. This is when the Canadians stepped in with a new tactic, "creeping barrage".  Even though 3,000 Canadians died in France, the outcome of this new strategy was very successful. After this battle, Canadians became a more independent nation, Canada did no longer need to look up to mother England. Canada gained more respect and reputation from this battle, this nation wasn't known as a colony fighting for Britain anymore. However, for this tactic to work, Canada needed teamwork from the British and French. In conclusion, this battle gained respect for out nation today.

  1. Do you think this battle was worth losing all 3000 men? And Why do you think that Canada failed the first time but succeeded the second, was it because of learning from their mistakes, and being more prepared?

    1. Well, the British and the French tried many times to take back what rightfully belong to them but they both failed, and when the Canadians stepped in with this new tactic, this defeated the Germans. The Canadians did not necessarily fail the first time because they were under British command and they were sent orders, it wasn't the Canadians choice to fight for the other British and French tactics. Yes, this battle was worth losing 3,000 men because it gained Canada more respect, although 3,000 is a large amount of loss, it was worth it because the Canadians took ownership over this victory, and reward comes after a sacrifice.

  2. Mel, great video. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if Canada should have put the same effort into planning Dieppe as they did in planning Vimy Ridge.

You have provided a solid interpretation of the battle.

    2. Yes we could've done more preparations, the Dieppe Raid was not very successful because even though we learned the German's defence skills, we should've planned better. For example, our militaries knew that they were going to get off on a beach, why did they not test if the tanks work on beaches? Anyways, I strongly belief that the Dieppe Raid was a disaster, because you can't say that is was successful without saying, "well, we learned this from the Dieppe raid", because by saying that, you're supporting the fact that Dieppe was a disaster although we have learned from it. With all this being said, yes I think we could've put more effort into planning for the Dieppe Raid.
