Canadian Identity

Facts
  • Played his first NHL season in 1979-80
  • Retired in 1999 and was enducted into the hall of fame the same year
  • Was born in Bratford, Ontario, Canada in 1961
Why I think he displays Canadian Identity is even though he didn't change world history he changed the history of hockey for Canadians.

Why he changed the history of hockey for canadians is he performed like no other canadian hockey player has ever had being the youngest player at only age 19 to score 50 goals in one season.

  1. I was wondering how changing the history of hockey represented Canada. Did Gretzky exhibit behaviour in his career like Canada does as a country?

    1. Hi Josh,

Your question is awesome. I don't know a lot about Gretzky, but am interested in hearing others' responses. Do you think Gretzky's behaviour and that of Canada is similar?

  2. Hi Anthony,

You have included great facts about "The Great One". Why is it important that Gretzky changed the face of hockey in Canada? What does this say about the Canadian identity? Is it possible for one person to have a large impact on a nation's identity?

Thanks for including a title and a label.

  3. I agree with you Anthony, I think that Gretzky is part of the Canadian identity because he played a big part in Canada's hockey history. I think he also is part of the Canadian Identity because even now after he has stopped playing, he still helps in the hockey community and is involved in and coaches hockey. This is part of the Canadian identity because a lot of Canadians help with hockey even if they don't play any more or haven't played just because they like the sport.

    1. Joel, this is a thorough response. You outline why you agree with Anthony's point of view.
