Genocide in The World

Everyone is interested in learning about the Holocaust in Germany because they think that we learned from are mistakes and now life is better but genocide has happened again and again. Genocide has happened in Rwanda, Australia, Bosnia and many other countries. All of these honorific events have lead to the death of millions and the displacement of millions from there homes making them refugees. Many groups like the United Nations, NATO and NORAD have devoted billions of dollars and energy into making sure that  genocide never happens again but the question on everyone's mind is are these groups plans working. Many people don't believe that these groups plans work because genocides are still happening today like in Syria. If you where in a position of power how would you make sure that genocides never happen again? 

Hitler vs Stalin Which killed the most people

Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union (Russia) from the mid 1920's to 1953. In this time, Stalin had upward of 20 million people killed. Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazi Party and Chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945. In this time period, Hitler had killed upward of 21 million people. Stalin may have been in power longer but Hitler had more people killed in less time. He also started World War 2, which Stalin would later enter in favour of Hitler. This ended when Hitler turned on him. Hitler's army spread throughout Europe and gained control of 85-90% of the country. After evaluating these facts you can see that Hitler was the cause of more deaths than Stalin. 

How WW2 violated the Geneva Convention

The Geneva Convention was put in place to try to stop the horrors of war that the soldiers had to face if captured. The tension and anger of the army grow so that when they got hold of a POW they would not abide by the Geneva Convention and would see the enemy soldiers as nothing more than another person to die. The breach was not one sided, both sides army's break the convention. Some know accounts of a breach where when German soldiers that had surrendered where shot by the Russian because of the death of  the Russian civilians. Another account was when some American soldiers killed some Germans, after they had surrender, because they might have lost loved ones by the German soldiers. So both sides where found guilty of several accounts of breaking the Geneva Convention, and had to face punishment for the horrors that were inflicted.

MS St. Louis

 The voyage of the MS St. Louis is a dark stain on the history of Canada because the Canadian government refused to accept the European Jews into Canada and made them go back to Europe. The government refused to accept them because it was very anti-Semitic at that time. The government faced pressure from the Canadian population to allow the Jewish refugees into Canada, but did nothing. Some people changed their opinion, wanted the Jewish people to stay, and tried to assist them by pressuring the government to help.  The captain, Gustav Schröder, said to the Canadians that the Jewish people where planning a mass suicide to try and get the government to help them. If the government had helped the Jewish people, they wouldn't have had to return to Europe and most of them would not have died in the concentration camps. This reveals that Canada was very anti-Semitic when the Jewish people came.

The Great Depression took place in the 1930's. It was devastating because the stock market crashed and many people lost their money. The market crashed because of many factors. The most prominent was that people tried to make money on the stock market by buying stocks then selling them at an even higher price. The sudden decrease in stock prices was the reason why it crashed. Many people had to leave their houses to go look for work. The churches and charities soon became overwhelmed and had to ask the government to help house the men looking for work. The government opened relief camps where the men could go live and work cutting down trees for 20 cents a day. These are the reasons why I think the depression was one of the worst times to live in North America.  

The importance of the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

On June 28, 1914 the Archduke Franz, and his wife, Archduchess Sophia were killed in a shotting by Gavrilo Princip, a memeber of a Serbian extremist group, called the Black Hand. The two had got in a limousine and were passing the crowds when a person throw a bomb into their limousine. The Archduke bravley throw the bomb away, neither he nor his wife was hurt in the explosion. When the limousine continued to pass, the young Serbian extremist jumped into there limousine and then proceeded to shot the pear, the two were dead within minutes. This assasination lead to anger and rage between the Austro-Hungarian Emperor and the Serbian nation. Other countries soon began to pick sides, which lead to World War 1. This is why the Assasination of Franz and his wife was important to the causes of World War 1.

Canadian Women's Army Corps Unit arriving in Italy, World War 2

As we learned in class, Canadian women did a lot in both World Wars, like building planes and bombs but not a lot of people know that women served as nurses and later they took on a larger role. In this photo, you can see women soldiers who have just landed in Italy. Women could enlist in any part of the armed services such as the Navy, Army or Air Force and received training in various fields.
